At Freds, we make sure that all facets of production from cooking to the creation & recycling of the containers is accounted for with our C02 offsets. Just Fred’s way of doing his bit !
PET “1” Containers
Moving forward we will be using PET 1 Standard container, known for longevity and reusability as well as being perfectly recyclable. While also being the lightest shippable container.
Ongoing efforts
Fred’s aims to maintain itself as 1000% or more carbon neutral. Our practices are done in the cleanest way right down to upcycling shipping boxes as much as possible.
Co2 Offset Initiatives
As mentioned, we use a company called 15trees. They take part in a large amount of tree planting exercises to help companies and individuals achieve carbon neutrality and more. We recommend definitely checking them out and supporting them as we will continue to do. Featured below are 2 projects that we have directly contributed trees to.
SITE 1 | Ballarat District
The trees were planted in early autumn, and included species such as Wattles, Callistemon, Sheoaks and Eucalyptus trees. Some of the benefits of trees include:
- adding to the flora biodiversity,
- providing habitat for fauna,
- preventing erosion of the river banks during high flows,
- increasing diversity of insect life and
- the diversity of feed for the life in the river.
SITE 2 | Powlett River
The native vegetation planted included; Manna Gum, Swamp Gum, Peppermint, Blue Gum, Banksia, Tea tree, shrubs and grasses indigenous to that region. In the interests of heathy ecosystems a range of tiers or layers need to be planted, hence we have supported the planting of not only large canopy trees but also with under-storey vegetation such as shrubs, grasses and ground-covers. All plants were sourced from Willum Warrain Aboriginal Corporation in Hastings.
Why PET 1 Plastic Containers?
Climate Impact
Glass bottles are much thicker and heavier than plastic bottles. Generally, the weight of glass packaging is multiple times heavier than plastic packaging! In our example, the 1 L glass bottle is 17-18 times heavier than the plastic bottle.
When we ask ourselves whether to buy a glass or a plastic bottle, we should think about the impacts per bottle and not the impacts per kg material!
Summary Comparison
Along with the LCA (Life cycle assessment) of PET, it is vital to perform comparative life cycle analysis of alternate packaging materials like glass and aluminium. This provides us with the relative sustainability of various packaging materials. Employing an LCA methodology to perform a comparative evaluation of beverage packaging materials such as glass, aluminium (Al), and PET. The study was based on a functional unit of 1000 L of beverage to be carried by 300 ml glass bottles, 330 ml Al-cans, and 2000 ml PET bottles which are manufactured, consumed, and disposed
